The Līgatne nature trails guide on your phone
LDT Gids is the audio guide to the Līgatne nature trails, which we built for the Nature Conservation Agency with support from the Latvian Environmental Protection Fund. The app leads visitors along the trails with a map and GPS, tells the animals' stories in audio for adults and children, and works where there is no mobile signal. It has been available on the App Store and Google Play since January 2022.

The brief
On the Līgatne nature trails visitors see the animals up close, but finding out more about them is hard because the mobile signal in the forest is weak. In a public tender, the Nature Conservation Agency looked for a developer to build a guide app for both platforms, including the design, the map icons and publishing in the stores.

The solution
We built the app with Flutter, so the iOS and Android versions share one codebase and evolve together. The GPS map shows the visitor's location and the trail points, which group into clusters nearby.
The map and all the audio recordings are built into the app, so the guide works without the internet. Twenty animals each have an audio story for adults and a separate one for children, plus text and a photo gallery.

Development
In 2023 and 2024 a QR code appeared by each animal that opens its page in the app. In 2025 and 2026 we updated the Flutter and Dart versions and rebuilt the map so the app meets the requirements of the latest phones and stores. The app works in Latvian and English.

The result
- One app for iOS and Android phones, published in both stores.
- An offline map and audio that work without a mobile signal.
- Twenty animal stories in two versions, for adults and for children.
- QR codes on the trails and regular maintenance since 2022.
